Driver's Note: Road America 2022

August 19-21, 2022 | Road America | SRO America TCX

I was really excited for the race at Road America. Being my home track, I was expecting a lot of family and friends to be in attendance this weekend. I wanted to put on a good show and hopefully bring home a good result for them and the rest of the Wisconsin crowd.

Friday

It was great being back behind the wheel again at Road America. This track is, and always will be, my favorite track in the country. The timelessness of the design really brings the most out of any driver who takes it on. I wasn’t super comfortable with the setup of the car Friday morning, so we had to make some changes to get it dialed in. By the end of the day, we were definitely closer to where we needed to be. However, I still had the feeling it was going to be a tough weekend and knew I would have to be on my A game all weekend.

Saturday

Qualifying was definitely disappointing. At the end of the session, I ended up 4th on the grid as I wasn’t able to get a draft down any of the straights. I knew I would have some work to do during the race.

Race 1 was insane from the get-go. After getting a monster draft down the back straight I passed three cars going into turn 5 and took the lead of the race. Incidents behind me took out multiple of the top-running cars in TCX and brought out a full-course yellow flag. Once the race went back to green, I just had to hit my marks and stay focused to remain on top through the end of the race. It was a truly emotional moment to win in front of my hometown crowd. I was extremely happy to stand up on the top of the podium with family and friends cheering me on. I also grabbed the fastest lap of the race, and therefore, would be starting on pole for Race 2 on Sunday.

Sunday

Sunday’s race went off without a hitch. I led the race flag to flag for a clean weekend sweep. What started with a disappointing qualifying session on Friday turned out to be a very successful weekend. It was amazing to achieve this feat at my home track and cement my lead in the championship going into my least favorite track on the calendar, Sebring.
